Hal Daub

Harold John "Hal" Daub, Jr. (born April 23, 1941, in Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina) is a lawyer and politician in Nebraska affiliated with the Republican Party. He was elected as US Congressman from Nebraska's 2nd congressional district, serving 1981 to 1989; and as mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, serving 1995-2001.
==Background==
Hal Daub was born at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where his father was stationed. His family moved to North Omaha, where Hal grew up. He graduated from Benson High School. He received his B.S. from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1963, and his J.D. from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Law, Lincoln, Nebraska in 1966. He served in the United States Army as an infantry captain from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War.
Daub settled in Omaha, where he went into private practice of law. He also became active in the Republican Party. He was elected in 1980 to the House of Representatives, representing Nebraska's 2nd congressional district. He was elected for three more terms, serving in total from 1981 to 1989.
In 1988, Daub ran for the Senate, but lost in the Republican primary to incumbent appointed Senator David Karnes. Daub ran for Senate again in 1990, and was defeated by the Democratic incumbent, J. James Exon, by a 59%-41% margin.
In 1995, Daub was elected as mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, serving until 2001. Daub rejoined Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin LLP (now Husch Blackwell Sanders) in 2005, where he currently serves as partner.
In 2007, Daub briefly ran for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Chuck Hagel; he exited the race to offer an early endorsement to Mike Johanns, former Nebraska governor and USDA secretary, who won the seat.〔("Hal Daub exits Senate race" ), ''Omaha.com'', Retrieved September 29, 2007〕
On November 10, 2008, Daub announced he was running again for Mayor of Omaha. On April 7, 2009, Daub won the most votes in the mayoral primary.〔http://www.votedouglascounty.com/pdf/2009Primary/Results-Summary.htm〕 But on May 12, 2009, he lost to Democrat Jim Suttle in the race for mayor, with unofficial final results of 48.7% to 50.7%.〔("2009 Election results" ), Vote Douglas County〕 In that election, Democrats also gained control of the city council.
Daub served for five years on the board of Omaha's Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority (MECA). On November 6, 2012, he was elected to the board of regents of the Nebraska University system.
